FUTURES
Futures (2024) is a sculpture about movement in time.
poplar wood
40x32x27 cm
The future is not a single predetermined destination but an open-ended world of possibilities shaped by our actions. The artwork features multiple branches rooted in a single point; it can be seen as paths emerging from one moment in time and developing into different futures; some are shorter and more straightforward, others more complex with twists and turns. Just as outwards, the sculpture can be read inwards: many paths can lead to one conclusion. Its wave-like shape and blue accents relate the flow of time with the fluidity and motion of water.
— Development —
While the idea for Futures was clear since the start of the work, its shape was not. It took about a year of alternating between carving and pauses to complete, due to both pragmatic reasons of time constraints and to embrace that some futures are not apparent in long advance. They became clear step by step, just as the shape of this work did.
Futures is exhibited from 6. Jan 2025 in the Learning Centre Désiré Collen, Leuven, BE.
